Metromode is Colorado’s leading LGBTQ+ lifestyle media company that produces journalism through magazine, digital, and social media platforms not found in mainstream media. Metromode, the largest local LGBTQ+ magazine in Colorado, was first published in 2004. We are committed to high-quality journalism. We believe in paying our writers, photographers, illustrators, models, and freelancers fair pay for their work. If you would like to work with us, feel free to look over our open positions below. Contributing Writers

The editorial content featured in Metromode Magazine reflects our readership: LGBTQ+, intelligent, intuitive, and adventurous. We welcome inquiries from qualified, experienced freelance writers who are interested in contributing to our publication. We need writers for political news pieces, feature stories, interview pieces, and culture articles.

Responsibilities

Generating ideas for future stories and features that would interest the magazine's readers. Reading and researching press releases, features and articles. Fact checking, verifying information and interviewing sources. Writing, editing, proofreading, and subbing text. Attending relevant events, fairs and conferences. Creating and maintaining a network of contacts. Sourcing original images and illustrations to accompany articles. Meeting and liaising with other staff including designers, photographers, editors, etc. Staying up-to-date with privacy, defamation and contempt law. Complying with industry and ethical guidelines.

Requirements

A degree in Journalism or English is preferred but not necessary. One-year experience in writing professionally. Attention to detail. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in written and verbal English. Ability to take direction and constructive criticism well. 

 

To be considered, please submit a resume and three published articles to the publisher. We do not accept unsolicited story pitches from new freelance writers. We pay our writers $100 per page. There are one, two, three, and four page articles within the magazine. Writers have the ability to write multiple articles per issue as long as they are the best fit for each individual article.

Photographers

We are seeking talented photographers to produce unique artwork for both print and digital publications. As a photographer, you will work closely with the publisher and writers to understand their requirements and effectively capture what they're looking for through captivating photography. If you possess these creative abilities, we want to hear from you.

Your primary objective will be to create high-quality photography within challenging timeframes. Collaboration, adaptability, and a keen eye for detail are essential qualities for this role. Join our team and contribute your artistic skills to enhance our publication and engage our audience through compelling visuals.

Responsibilities

Creates content with an exceptional range of creative, technical, and documentary imagery. Maintains relationships with clients, team members, models, stylists, hair/makeup artists, and assistants, etc. Collaborates with publisher, writers, and possibly some advertisers. Executes standard photography operation procedures including image editing techniques, tools, processes, and guidelines. Archives images and organizes files. Ensures studio output exceeds industry standards and expectations. Drives towards continuous improvement and creative solutions. Keeps equipment up to date, organized, and maintained. Oversees brand standards, lighting technique, and image quality. Utilizes up-to-date knowledge of product trends, consumer buying, and photography/imaging technology to enhance product photo presentation.

Qualifications & Skills

Firm handle on a photography studio, its environment, and its processes. Strong communication skills. Maintain high standards for creative output. Strong work ethic. Basic social media skills including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, and YouTube. Ability to size images and color settings for the web and social media. SEO and social media marketing.

Requirements

5-years experience in studio and photo industry.​ Knowledge of DSLR (Nikon preferred) and natural lighting, indoor, studio lighting techniques. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom, Adobe Sketch, Sketchbook, or similar programs. Experience working on Mac Computers.​

Each issue of Metromode requires varying amounts of photography work. Pay is dependent on these amounts per issue. Please send samples of your work by email. If selected for an interview, please bring hard copies of your work to the interview.

Illustrator

We are seeking a talented Illustrator to produce unique artwork for both print and digital publications. As an Illustrator, you will work closely with the publisher and writers to understand their requirements and effectively capture what they're looking for through captivating illustrations. If you possess the creative ability to transform messages and ideas into visually appealing artwork, we want to hear from you.

Your primary objective will be to create high-quality illustrations within challenging timeframes. Collaboration, adaptability, and a keen eye for detail are essential qualities for this role. Join our team and contribute your artistic skills to enhance our publication and engage our audience through compelling visuals.

Responsibilities

Prepare rough drafts according to requirements. Combine hand-drawing and painting with digital media to create complete illustrations. Refine designs with illustration software. Use various colors, graphics and effects to better visualize each concept. Format images using computer-aided design software. Apply isometric techniques to add perspective to complex shapes. Participate in design briefs with publisher and writers to identify their needs. Define time and budget limitations. Ensure that printed illustrations meet quality and color standards. Brainstorm with the design team to come up with new ideas, patterns and styles. Stay up-to-date with new design techniques and software.

Requirements and Skills

Proven work experience as an Illustrator, Graphic Designer or similar role. Demonstrable portfolio of completed illustrations. Hands-on experience with computer-aided design software. Solid knowledge of image editing and digital sketching software, like Photoshop, Indesign and Adobe Illustrator. Drawing skills with an attention to detail, both by hand and digital pen. Strong aesthetic and conceptual skills. Ability to collaborate and meet deadlines. BSc degree in Design, Visual Arts preferred but not necessary.
