In a groundbreaking report released by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI,) it has been revealed that nearly 30% of Generation Z adults -which the survey’s researchers specify as those ages 18 to 25- in the United States identify as LGBTQ. This significant finding highlights a generational shift in the understanding and acceptance of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. As societal norms evolve, Gen Z’s attitudes towards LGBTQ identities reflect broader trends in social change and inclusivity.
The PRRI report, titled "The State of LGBTQ America," is a comprehensive survey that examines the attitudes, identities, and experiences of LGBTQ individuals across different age groups. The data indicates that 29.6% of Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQ. This is a substantial increase compared to previous generations, with 16% of Millennials, 7% of Generation X, 4% of Baby Boomers, and 4% of The Silent Generation identifying as LGBTQ.
The report's methodology involved surveying a representative sample of over 10,000 adults in the United States, ensuring that the findings are robust and reflective of the broader population. The survey explored various aspects of LGBTQ identity, including sexual orientation, gender identity, and the intersection of these identities with other demographic factors such as race, religion, and political affiliation.
The findings are in line with those of other major surveys, including Gallup’s, that show Gen Z is the queerest adult generation to date. In its most recent poll, released in February of last year, Gallup found 7.2% of adults in the U.S. identify as LGBTQ, including nearly 20% of those in Gen Z, which that survey defined as those ages 19 to 26.

Several factors contribute to the higher rate of LGBTQ identification among Gen Z. One of the most significant is the increased visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ individuals in media and society. Over the past two decades, there has been a notable shift towards greater representation of LGBTQ characters in television, film, and other forms of media. This visibility plays a crucial role in normalizing LGBTQ identities and providing young people with relatable role models.
Moreover, social media has given rise to a more connected and supportive environment for LGBTQ individuals. Platforms like Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have become spaces where LGBTQ youth can find communities, share their experiences, and advocate for their rights. The internet has effectively broken down geographical and social barriers, allowing for the formation of diverse and inclusive communities that transcend traditional boundaries.
Educational institutions have also played a part in fostering inclusivity. Many schools and universities now have policies and programs that support LGBTQ students, including gender-neutral bathrooms, LGBTQ clubs, and anti-bullying initiatives. These efforts create safer and more accepting environments where young people feel comfortable exploring and affirming their identities.
The increase in LGBTQ identification among Gen Z has significant social and political implications. As this generation becomes more politically active, their attitudes and values will shape the future of policies and legislation related to LGBTQ rights. Gen Z's strong support for LGBTQ equality is likely to drive progress in areas such as anti-discrimination laws, healthcare access, and protections for transgender individuals.
The PRRI report also highlights the intersectionality within the LGBTQ community. For instance, LGBTQ people of color face unique challenges and experiences that differ from those of their white counterparts. Addressing these issues requires concerted efforts from policymakers, educators, healthcare providers, and the community at large. Anti-discrimination laws must be strengthened and effectively enforced. Mental health services need to be more accessible and tailored to the needs of LGBTQ individuals. Education systems should continue to promote inclusivity and provide support for LGBTQ students.
Allies play a crucial role in supporting the LGBTQ community. Allyship involves actively advocating for LGBTQ rights, challenging discriminatory practices, and fostering inclusive environments. Allies can contribute by educating themselves about LGBTQ issues, using inclusive language, and standing up against homophobia and transphobia.

Organizations and advocacy groups are also vital in advancing LGBTQ rights. Groups such as the Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, and The Trevor Project work tirelessly to support LGBTQ individuals and promote equality. Their efforts range from policy advocacy and legal support to providing resources and crisis intervention services.
The findings from the PRRI report underscore a significant generational shift in the identification and acceptance of LGBTQ identities. Nearly 30% of Gen Z adults identifying as LGBTQ reflects broader trends towards inclusivity and the breaking down of traditional norms around gender and sexuality.
